Hibiscus (herb). The word hibiscus is Greek and this name was originally given to the plant Althea by Dioscorides. In India hibiscus is a traditional medicinal plant used in Ayurveda. Research in this country has proven the antihypertensive and antioxidant activity of the plant. Researchers say that an extract derived from hibiscus flowers can have the same beneficial effects on heart health as red wine and tea. Contributes to the good metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids.
