Greek grated oregano. Oregano is an ancient medicinal plant that is also used in cooking. For years it has been recognized as a “functional food” for its antioxidant properties and prevention of many diseases. Oregano is also an abundant source of many nutrients, such as vitamin K, vitamin C, vitamin A, manganese, iron, calcium, carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin and cryptoxanthin.

Oregano is the emblem of Greek and Mediterranean cuisine in general. With its spicy taste, it blends perfectly with the extra virgin olive oil and lemon. Many foods in Crete and Greece are served or cooked with this simple sauce such as goat oregano, potatoes oregano, liver, fish, feta and even boiled zucchini. Oregano in many islands of the Cyclades and the Dodecanese is added to the bellies of fish, which are grilled to flavor them.

Sprinkle the classic village salad and feta with oregano.

It goes well with pizzas but also with various breads which are kneaded with spices such as cumin, tomato and oil.

You can also flavor with oregano olive oils, which in this way are preserved longer, vinegar and black olives.
